Digest Tea was originally formulated by Barbara O'Neill as a blend of herbs to support optimal stomach function. By increasing the liver's production of hydrochloric acid, the digestive process is enhanced. Low hydrochloric acid is associated with a long list of digestive complaints and disorders.
Ingredient insight:
Gentian - (Gentiana lutea) Traditionally used as a bitter herb to aid digestion, by stimulating the release of hydrochloric acid.
Dandelion - (Taraxacum officinale) With it's naturally occurring polysaccharides, known to reduce stress on the liver while supporting it's function of excreting bile.
Liquorice root - (Glycyrrhiza glabra) Contains beneficial compound glycyrrhizin, which has antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger - (Zingiber officinale) Contains key phytonutrients known as gingerols, research has shown that these can have an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. Soothes irritated gastrointestinal mucosa, increases salivary secretion, and stimulates bile production.
Golden seal - (Hydrastis canadensis) Known for its antibiotic properties, effective in slowing H. Pylori growth (a bacteria identified as causing pain, inflammation, and an increased risk of stomach ulcers) and containing berberine, a naturally occurring alkaloid used for it's anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic actions.
Directions for use:
Take 1 tsp of herbs, to 1 cup of water. Bring to a slow boil and turn down heat. Gently simmer for 10min with lid on pot. (50g/3 slices of fresh ginger root can also be added for an extra zing)
Let tea cool to room temp, strain, and keep refrigerated in a glass bottle. Tea will keep for up to 5 days.
Drink 60ml, 10-15 minutes before eating a meal. Best consumed warm for more effective absorption. Either warm the dose of tea, or add a dash of boiling water to bring up temperature.
Can also be taken between meals for indigestion or heart burn.
